Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE 42 mm – Midnight : More magical than the Wizard of Oz

Had been worried by reviewers comments on battery life. Received the watch, gave it a full charge and connected to my huawei mate 10 pro. Everything seemed to work as expected. Did say there was a software update, but left that for the moment. Changed the watch face made a few setting changes and then decided to see how long the battery lasted. 96 hours (4 days) later and it was at 23%. Might have managed to squeeze a fifth day, but 4 was what i was hoping. Check notifications, read a couple of emails, replied to whatsapp, did a stress test looked at weather, looked at health information, typical things.

I purchased this watch pre-release after seeing it displayed at a samsung stand in westfield stratford. I’ve been looking to try a smart watch and the only one i’ve seen so far that looks nice enough for me to wear was a £1000+ watch which i was not willing to go for. Unlike some reviewers i don’t consider the £300 a high price (compared to most decent mechanical watches that run well over £1000+) and i’m happy it represents good value. The watch is good enough looking not to look out of place when wearing a suite and i’ve found it integrated easily with my android smart phone. As a time piece it works nicely with a choice of watch faces that will work for most people. The health features work as well as any others i’ve experienced (i’m not really going to worry about under reporting of steps – i’ve never had a device that does not have foibles with that). The thing tracks my sleep accurately (which feels like i’ve got big brother on my wrist) and gives nice nudges if i’ve been sitting around too long. Other useful features include weather at my location, text messages, weight goals etc. So far nothing has failed to work as advertised. Battery performance has been fine – never even come close to draining in a day (although i don’t listen to music on it)my only reason for giving a 4 star reviews is 1) the rubber strap is ok but i’d have preferred something a bit nicer included (easily remedied by buying something else thought) and 2) i’ve still not really used all the functionality deeply.

Nice enough looking watch with a good display but if you want this watch for anything fitness related look elsewhere. The step and floor counters are wildly inaccurate and the heart rate sensor isn’t much better. The forums are full of similar reports so this isn’t an isolated case. Hopefully samsung will fix these issues with a software update but as it stands i honestly couldn’t recommend it.

Aside from the fact that this was a pre-ordered purchase, my watch and charger were delivered around 5 weeks after the release date after many,many chats and calls to amazon cs (i’ll give be them their dues and say it was more than likely out of their control). I’ll start with the watch which i’ll be honest in saying looked slightly ‘tacky’ with the rubber strap (this was immediately changed to a tan leather one which was ordered long before the watch arrived). I booted it up to be immediately presented with a beautiful clear screen and directions on how to successfully pair the device. I had watched a fair few youtube videos and was pretty clued up at this point. Moving on to the features, the call and text features get regular use as does the sleep tracker but i’m still a little disappointed by the lack of 3rd party android apps. The watch faces are highly customisable and i pretty much choose a different configuration every day. There are literally 1000’s of one’s to download which i have downloaded a few but tend to stick to the samsung one’s. I’ve also since purchased a few more straps which add yet more combinations to the overall look. All in all i’m sure there’s something for everyone. The companion app also works great, giving you the ability to tailor your apps as well as downloading new faces and apps which are sent directly to your watch.

HUAWEI Band 4 Pro- Smart Band Fitness Tracker, 4.5 stars

Have had it since saturday and am pretty impressed. Battery is still @ 80% after having tracked 2* 1 hour jogging sessions, a walk and trusleep enabled 2 nights in a row. Gps seems accurate as compared to my phone (p20 pro). During jogging discrepiancy was i think 100m. It was about 200m during the 4 k walk where i took frequent nt stops ( so have to investigate what happens during the stops). Wheather at the time was also really bad. Sleeping tracking as far as i can tell is ok ( obviously difficult to asses but number of wake periods at night was correct). It is really great that it is waterproof as well. I am deducting one star since health app is not perfect. For example it is not very clear what data is dispalyed on the home page – phone or band and app. Setup out of the box took 20 mins on my phone. I use it mainly for tracking outdoor running. It maps very accurately through gps the route i took and the time splits. Using the gps on drains the battery by 12-15% for a 40mins ru...
