Absolutely love this watch it does everything i need it too including swimming cycling running and many other activitiesit is a big watch face but looks stylish and it’s not too heavy – in fact it’s lighter than my normal day watch. That the fenix 3 charges on the go (if you have a power bank) means i don’t need to worry about it lasting the distance i’d i chose to attempt an ultra marathon in the futurebought as a refurbished watch and it was perfect no marks at all.
I’ve tried a few in the past (tom tom, polar, sunnto, fitbit, apple etc) and none compare to garmin. I also have the forerunner 620 – this is a nice upgrade from that model. The watch is big, it doesn’t look out of place on my wrist, but it could be too large for some women i would think. Got loads of features and finds the gps really quickly. The red is a dark red too which looks great with the silver face.
It is a great watch with many nice perks. I have used it during obstacles races and it has resisted being hit by rocks and drowned in mud and water. In 80% of locations, synchronizing gets stuck in red just one bar before full sync and you have to wait 15-20 minutes for it to finish. I have tested it outdoors in at least 30 different geographical locations in 4 different european countries and the problem persists. I have updated software many times but the problem still persists. It is frustrating to wait outdoors for 15-20 minutes before every running training. That’s why i give it only 3 stars.
Still figuring out all the functions but really comfortable to wear and the battery life is amazing. Heart rate monitor is really useful as a built in item. The silicone strap is a bit fiddly to put on in the morning but it is very light to wear all day. Phone and text notifications work really well. Downloaded some watch faces but once you settled on one you won’t change it much. Might purchase the metal strap at some stage.
I use this watch as my standard watch now, having replaced a suunto vector. I have also replaced my garmin forerunner, edge and fenix 2. As a day to day watch it looks smart amd like a normal watch as opposed to some of the other sports watches and event the fenix 2. The activity tracking functions are useful and although the movement timer (watch buzzes at you’ve been inactive for too long during waking hours) can at times be irritating it is helpful. The step tracker isn’t the most accurate and it will often miss more minor movements such as when i’m walking about whilst delivering a presentation, but is good enough. As a sports watch it’s proved to beotustandog, the battery life is good, covering me for the various activities. In terms of accuracy it’s always seemed to be more or less identical to everyone else’s watch. The amount of data you can generate from a single run or ride is handy, although the recovery timer is a bit generic and doesn’t really take into account you’re own physical capability but as with the steps is good enough. Tracback has proved handy on a number of occasions and is a good way of just trying out new run routes with confidence that you won’t have any dramas making your way back, was also handy on a race that in he previous year of missed a turning but using the basic mapping function available was able to pick it up the second year. There have been problems with the app in terms of transferring data across but for the most part it’s been very quick and simple to use with the bluetooth transfer and it’s not affected the battery as much as i thought it would.
Definitely the best multisport fitness watch i have had so far. I have previously had a garmin 230 and a vivoactive. Garmin 230 is a good entry level and the vivoactive, well, i replaced it within a few months. This watch is great, accuracy is better than the vivoactive by a long way, the functionality is a lot better. Once you get the hang of uploading routes, it is really easy to do. I pair it with a footpod for extra real time accuracy.
-
Loads of features. Perfect for triathlons
-
Everything is great except mediocre GPS syncing.
-
Good sports and day to day watch.
I have upgraded from fr610 to the fenix3. Easy to upload, great battery life, smart measurements really impact your performance. Cadence, stride, oscillations, etc. If you follow them you definitely improve your speed. I wanted a watch that was touchscreen and without band. I understood i cannot get the same data without a band. Garmin confirmed that they do not see them making a wrist based pulse watch that gives you the same amount of data as a band watch. Moving away from a touchscreen was not a big deal when you have a fenix 3.
Excellent running watch and surprisingly good smart watch also. Battery lasted an entire 2 week road trip to america with regular morning trail runs and daily activity tracking. On the move it’s easy to see running data, heart rate data and to be able to skip tracks and see messages without having to remove your phone from your pack is a big plus. Not sure how this compares to other watches but i’m left wanting for nothing with this beast.

Training FeaturesGarmin fenix 3 Sapphire is packed with training features to tell you about your form and fitness. The first is the VO2 max estimator. When used with a heart rate monitor (sold separately), fenix 3 Sapphire crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute. Track changes to your VO2 max to see your fitness gains and to compare with your peers. Other fitness metrics include recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a race predictor, which estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number. |
Advanced Running MetricsOnce running gets serious, fenix 3 Sapphire with HRM-Run monitor (sold separately) tracks all the advanced metrics that are needed to better understand and improve. Advanced Running Dynamics analyse your running: Vertical oscillation and ratio — the degree of ‘bounce’ in your running motion and the benefit ration to stride length. Ground contact time and balance — shows how much time, in the running motion, your foot is on the ground rather than in flight and lets you check your running symmetry. Cadence — number of steps per minute. Stride length — determines a responsive current pace. |
Skiing, Snowboarding, Swimming, Golf or RowingBeyond running fenix 3 Sapphire supports swim training, skiing, rowing sports, including stand up paddle boarding and even golfing. During swimming workouts, it tracks your distance, pace, stroke count and more. Ski/Board mode tracks your entire skiing day with speed, distance, vertical drop and an automatic run counter (with Auto Pause for the lift line) and more, all the data is available at your fingertips at any time. For rowing, it provides number of strokes, stroke rate and even stroke efficiency. Golf mode gives you yardage to the front back and middle of the green for any single course you’ve downloaded from Garmin Connect. |

Outdoor NavigationGarmin fenix 3 Sapphire provides comprehensive navigation and tracking functionalities to guide you on and off the beaten track. Fenix 3 Sapphire records a GPS track log creating a ‘bread crumb trail’ as you move. It also allows you to mark locations, such as a start/finish line, course checkpoint, or a campsite, vehicle or other point of interest. With your fenix 3 Sapphire, you can create and follow courses or mark up to 1,000 locations and navigate to them. Plan trips and share adventures with friends and family using Garmin’s free planning tool BaseCamp on your computer. |
More than just ABC sensorsFenix 3 Sapphire is equipped with a barometric altimeter and an electronic 3-axis compass. The device auto-calibrates these sensors using its GPS receiver to provide the most accurate information possible. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. The 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you’re moving or not. For accurate temperature reading from the watch, pair your watch with the Garmin external temperature sensor (sold separately). |
Stay ConnectedGarmin fenix 3 Sapphire is really smart and keeps you in touch with the world – be it through your smartphone to receive Smart Notifications directly on the watch, to automatically save your stats to Garmin Connect throughout the day. If you want to, your Fenix 3 can keep your family and friends informed about your whereabouts through LiveTrack. Get even more information through your watch by combining it with one of the many optional Garmin ANT+ sensors like Vector for cycling power, tempe for temperature, HRM-run for running dynamics and more. Personalise your fenix 3 Sapphire with free downloads from the Garmin Connect IQ store. You can customise your watch face, add data fields and get apps and widgets that provide information at a glance. |
