HUAWEI 115016 – What are you looking for?

I bought this smartwatch during the black friday sales and saved £50 and i am so pleased that i did. The watch from huawei (same make as my phone) is simply fantastic and much better than i expected. To be honest i’d been thinking on and off for some years about buying a smartwatch as i was unsure about the battery life and the quality. However all of my fears has been dispelled as the watch does all that i ask of it and more. I am not a great sports person that does a lot of running or counts my steps but the functions are there if i need to. Set-up with my phone was straightforward as i followed the instructions in the small manual provided and within minutes bluetooth was working on both devices. This model does not have a sim but i can still use it to call my friends via my contact list on the watch. Google answers immediately any questions i have and the quality of the speaker is actually quite good. I transferred some of my music files to the watch (it has 2gb of space) and listen to it via my bluetooth headphones when required. To use all of the functions you have to download the wear os from the play store but it only took a couple of minutes and it was up and running, sorry that was not meant to be a pun.

A long time android wear user, my 3-year-old hw1 finally gave up and as we’re all waiting for the fake new 3100 chip, i didn’t want to spend a fortune on a replacement just yet. So i had tried the ticwatch pro, and found using it as a smartwatch somewhat disappointing (battery and performance). I even bought a samsung galaxy watch at full price and sent it back within 3 daysbut this little old hw2 will be a keeper i think. Small screen, it is way too small for a premium product and an old bloke like me with failing eyesight. Performance is about on par with all other wear devices, a combination of poor os and ancient technology. Screen, oled, so pretty, reasonably bright, high pixel density, low battery consumption. Form, looks and feels like a mid range casio, but it works. 6 i think , eagerly hoping it will get the second generation of this os. Battery – this is the big surprisefirst i hadn’t realised it has a ‘time only’ function and thus could last for a month without smart functions. Second, delv into the apps and disable runtastic and a couple of other huawei apps, and you can get 3 days with ‘always on’ disabled.

Had been mulling over the apple watch for ages but i just didn’t like the square style, plus being tied to a non ee phone contract meant that i couldn’t make use of the 4g version. Only became aware of this watch through the prime deal day, a lot less than the apple watch plus runs on any contract you like on its own number – to not be pestered by work calls at the weekend is a plus in my book. Gave it a go but wasn’t expecting much from the reviews of ios integration. I’ve had it a week now and it’s absolutely brilliant, great range of watch faces (miles better than apple watch), good range of notifications, call incoming, texts (not imessages but if it’s a problem just use whatsapp) and apple calendar integration brilliant. Battery life lasts whole day, just charge overnight. I’ve also not had any issues with google pay, fast and responsive(activate by the programmable bottom button. ) i picked up advice from forums to disable ‘ok google” voice recognition and to not use third party apps which can drain battery life. . I also like the chunky look, smaller watch face isn’t a problem – it’s a similar design to the tag heuer so why grumble?. Well chuffed, and would have purchased not on a prime deal had i known. Only thing i’m changing is the strap, just cheapens it a little, but plenty of options for the 20mm fitting.

If you’re looking to move from an overpriced iphone to a flagship android phone and are used to an iwatch, then you’ll be disappointed. If you’ve never had a smart watch before then this is as good a model as any to have. The screen’s touch response often leaves a lot to be desired, often lagging whilst at other times being a little too sensitive. If you use a banking app rather than gpay (not all banks have signed up for this) then you won’t be able to pay using your watch. The design is not the most elegant looking compared to some models available. In fairness the above are the only real issues and the only comparisons i have are the iwatch which is easily £100 more expensive, and a zenwatch 2 which is elegant to look at but has less functionality. For the money this is a good entry in to the market of smartwatches, just don’t expect miracles of any of these. Only the iwatch truly excels and you need to commit to apple’s expensive world for that.

Set up is easy, at least with an android based phone. Being an android itself, you can use the google store to install apps. This watch has many faces, some simple, some giving plenty of information, like the mariner commander. You can also buy different straps. A little bit confusing regarding water: doc says not good for swimming but it also says it’s ip68 so get immerse up tp 1. Swimming is not scuba diving as far as i know. Use the huawei app, instead of the google wear, plus the huawei health app.

Looked at the £299 samsung galaxy watch for a while and missed pre-order before launch then wekt out of stock, then i held off due to price and some concerning reviews post launch. This came up at a bargain price short term and seemed too good price point to miss. I have been happy with it, especially for the price.Battery easily lasts a day even with active use. I generally start the day on full charge. I generally use it acrively all day, then turn off always on screen when i go to bed (save battery and stop it being lit up in the dark). Normally its on about 25-30% when i wake up. I take it off and charge while i have breakfast and a shower etc and its circa 90%+ again ready for the day ahead. Pretty fast charge unless reviews i have ready for the samsung flagships.
